Back to the Future – Blog it!

On the group FlamingHot, we were recently asked to blog about suddenly waking up 5 years from now.  What does your glass world look like? How would our art have changed?  How would we have changed?

5 years from now is 2013.  It has recently been set by my brain as a potential target date for completing my PhD.  I’m praying that it also would show ongoing improvement in my work with glass and that I would still be using glass as my stress-buster!  I’ve currently been lampworking almost 4 years now, and with 5 more under my belt, I would hope to achieve development in my skills similarly to Tink, Kimberly, Boheme, AngelfireArtGlass, VillaDesign, Shibumi Glass, and yes, even dare I say it, Corina.

I would hope that Kansas City finally opened it’s eyes and started some kind of hot glass shop like 3rd Degree in Saint Louis.  I could see our own Mu girl, Julie running the show!

2013, I best have lost some DAMN weight too…..

….. but that is a whole ‘nother blog!

It’s the Little Things… Blog It!

Little things, where do I start?  My love of glass probably started as a seed when in HS I was going to be a ceramic engineer, loving chemistry, math, and problem solving.  How the heck did I end up a Clinical Social Worker working on a PhD in Public/Population Health?

I love the REACTIONS in glass.  I love the physics in glass.  I love having the glass teach me as it provides me therapy in “melting” the day’s problems away!  I love the AWE in observing the products of my and OTHERS creativity!!!

The sisterhood I have found in the glass world has recently sustained me when my professional world COULD NOT!  The “thinkers” as they are known on LE, are always there for me!  There are days that “thinking” does not have ANYTHING to do with work… LOL.

Glass, the little things.  Life is frit, Frit makes pretty colors, Pretty colors make sweet beads, Beads and Glass make life bearable…..

Bluba’s Underwater World….

bluba, originally uploaded by serenasbeadery.

Bluba was made by Ms. Serena of Serena’s Beadery. She is an incredible mom and wife who does lampwork FULL TIME! Her hubby is also a very nice person and is super supportive of Serena. I think supportive spouses are a pre-requisite for doing lampwork, as mine is also uber supportive of me.

Anyway, back to the bead! Serena made this one and brought it last weekend to Becky’s in STL, which was AWESOME fun (thx Carl and Becky again!) She used my lapidary flat grinder to grind 3 windows into the beautiful underwater world she had created.

You can find more fun like this at Lampwork Etc. where we all hang out 24/7/365… Thinkers UNITE!!! LOL
